Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) uses a cuff to temporarily restrict blood flow to a muscle or group of muscles in a targeted area. Pressure is applied while the athlete performs exercises. This decreases the oxygen level in said muscles. By minimizing the oxygen levels, the body automatically thinks its working harder than it is. Therefore, the athlete can lift lighter weights and receive the same benefits as lifting something heavier. The body will increase hormone production necessary to build muscles and help the athlete increase strength. BFR is an excellent training tool for athletes with weight bearing restrictions (example post ACL rehabilitation)
