Branched Chain Amino Acids are essential nutrients (Leucine, Valine, and Isoleucine) that the body can get from either a dietary supplement or through their dietary choices. The name "Branched Chain" comes from the chemical structure of the amino acids.
BCAAs are needed as our bodies don't produce leucine, valine, and isoleucine on our own. Therefore, we can only obtain the amino acids through diet or supplements.
The best time to consume BCAAs is before your workout. But the supplement will be extremely beneficial when taken in high amounts and for extended periods of time (more than ten days).
There is a difference between BCAAs and protein powder. BCAAs are amino acids the body is not able to produce on their own while protein powder is a supplement with just protein. Whey protein can also help those suffering from malnutrition gain weight, aide in wound healing , and when given to infants in small amounts it can reduce their odds of contracting allergies or eczema.
The best time to consume whey protein is after training or after a competition.
Whey protein includes many essential amino acids and BCAAs and comes from whey/animals. Plant based protein comes from a different source (soy, pea, etc) and either black BCAAs or amino acids or have them in smaller quantity.

Plant based protein can be used to aid in muscle recovery and is a better protein supplement for those who are dairy free/vegan/vegetarian. Plant based protein is obviously from a plant source which makes it more inclusive for those who are vegan or vegetarian along with those who are dairy free. While it varies depending on the exact supplement you're using, plant based protein may contain smaller amounts of essential amino acids and BCAAs compared to whey protein but it varies with each product. Whey protein is derived as a by-product in the cheese-making process and is found in milk.
